 Do you have a creative book project that you would like us to consider for publication? We're currently open for new submissions though we are still working through the samples which came in over the past several months. 

What we ask for is an email to this address describing your project or manuscript and including a sample of approximately 20 pages.  We publish poetry, short stories, novels, novellas (if accompanied by other stuff), plays, and creative non-fiction.  So tell us what you have and let your sample speak for you.  If we find the sample irresistible, we will contact you and ask to see the full ms (doc or docx is fine).  If we are not interested, we will try to let you know as soon as possible.  If you're reading this in May of 2024, we should be almost finished working through the samples which flooded us earlier.  We are sometimes overwhelmed with submissions which deserved full manuscript reading; still, we can only asked for a small fraction of those.

If we ask for and receive your full manuscript, it will be given to at least two paid readers who will enjoy and carefully evaluate it.  Based on their evaluations we will offer to publish it as it is, or with revisions, or we will decline the opportunity to publish.  We often have suggestions from our outside readers on ways to improve the work.  We pass those along to you whether or not we decide to publish your work.

You should know that we are a small press with a very small promotional budget.  We send out 10-15 copies with press releases to various newspapers, journals, and magazines for review; we get the book into our distributor's catalog, and maintain a web presence.   But we depend on the authors to do any further PR.  Several have done amazing jobs in promoting their work, organizing readings and signing events at their local libraries or bookstores, reading their works on radio shows or at other public events, getting their works reviewed in local papers or literary journals.  Authors do get 20 free copies to use for promotion or to show or just give to friends. 

If we publish your book, you will not pay us anything--though if you want more than your 20 free copies you will pay wholesale price for the extras.  Once your "distribution threshold" is reached, you will receive  royalties.  (A distribution threshold is the number of books that must be sold for us to recover our publication expenses--the money we've paid to readers, artists, graphic designers, printers, distributor, ebook maker, etc.)  Usually the threshold is about 200 books, including ebooks.  Royalties start at 30% of our "publishers compensation," but if book sales reach higher numbers (500, 1000) your royalty percentage increases (40%, 50%). 

The books, once they are uploaded and approved, become available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble within about a week.  Through our distributor, Ingram Content Group, they quickly become available all around the world.  Though ebooks are optional and refusing the option means a somewhat lower distribution threshold, most of our authors have been choosing to have ebooks.  Nowadays ebooks come with a (computerized) text-to-speech capacity so that listening to the book is possible. 

So far Golden Antelope Press has published 49 books.  We've also published 16 books as Blazing Sapphire Press for works relating to the literature, philosophy, and religions of India (Neal's area of expertise). We've also published 16 books as Naciketas Press for non-fiction works of general interest, and research not connected with India.

Welcome!

Golden Antelope Press is a small press operated in conjunction with, or spun off from, its sister presses, the more scholarly Blazing Sapphire and Naciketas Presses.  The focus of this press is creative works of fiction and poetry.  So far Golden Antelope has published forty-eight books, with another in the pipeline.  (Blazing Sapphire and Naciketas have a total of thirty-four.) We try to do about four books per year, and have had to turn down many wonderful projects.

We're open to receive new submissions about half of each year; the window is closed now but will reopen in May and stay open until November.  Please see our submission guidelines if you'd like to send us a sample.

Recent Activities

We are currently finishing work on Shari Lane's Two Over Easy All Day Long, a novel set mainly in a diner in rural Oregon and featuring a dozen characters you might find puzzling or even annoying, until something they say (or avoid saying) clicks, and you understand a bit more about...people.  After careers as (1) a Latin teacher, (2) a Montessori preschool head, and (3) a lawyer specializing in employment issues, Shari Lane has fully embraced her love of words, her sense that writers help create empathy and build bridges, that their tools include the belly laugh, the blank and silent stare, the missing puzzle pieces.  Two Over Easy has all of these; we hope you'll find yourself reading it soon.  (The author now lives on Lopez Island in Washington where she writes, manages and edits non-fiction for SHARK REEF Literary Magazine, and hosts a regular open mic for local writers.)

Meanwhile, besides bragging, we're working through our last batch of over a hundred samples, requesting a few full manuscripts for closer review.  

 Our History

Golden Antelope Press started in 2004 with a novella by the editor's mother, Vivian Delmonico: I'll Be Seeing You.  The name of the press, Golden Antelope, is mainly a reference to one of the great Indian epics, the Ramayana.  The pursuit of a beautiful golden antelope drew the hero, Rama, away from his lovely wife Sita, and allowed the villain to kidnap her.  Their long separation drives the epic.  (How much does it matter that the golden antelope was illusory--a beautiful trap set by a villain?  Or that Vivian Delmonico was from Golden, Colorado?)  Sanskrit tradition attributes the birth of poetry to Valmiki, the author of the epic.  He'd been living in the forest performing austerities when, one day, he came across a dead bird and her mate. The sadness he shared with the grieving bird was transformed into an aesthetic response--compassion--when he spoke the world's first verse.  (Does it matter whether the story is myth or fiction?)    

Neal and Betsy Delmonico are the owners and operators of this press.  Neal created Golden Antelope as a sister press to Blazing Sapphire Press which does works from and about India--including bilingual Sanskrit classics--and to Naciketas Press, which does non-fiction and publishes the Missouri Folklore Society Journal.

In the decade after the first Golden Antelope effort, there were occasional other works, mainly written by people the Delmonicos knew.  Ting Tang Tales (humorous short stories) by D.R. Singh came out in 2008, Wandering Eyes (poetry) by Aileen Gallagher in 2009.  Vivian Delmonico's more substantial book, Myra Lost and Found, kept us busy in 2011.  In  2015 we had three publications:  In Short, A Memory of the Other on a Good Day,  poetry by Allison Cundiff and Steven Schreiner; Always the Wanderer (novel) by George Koors; and A History of Tree Roots (poems) by Missouri Folklore Society's Phil Howerton.  In 2016 Cundiff's second book of poetry--Otherings--followed.   

When she retired from teaching in 2016, Betsy became the primary editor and proofreader for Golden Antelope.  By then, the three presses had a plan, and a history, and something new--manuscripts sent by wonderfully talented strangers.  Graphic design was admirably accomplished by Russell (Rusty) Nelson, professor of graphic design at Truman State University.  We enlisted Dave Malone to turn most of our books into ebooks, took on interns, and started getting scholar and writer friends to help us evaluate manuscripts and offer advice.   

2017-1023

We had a banner year in 2017, with eight books completed.  Poetry collections that year included the engaging You Know the Ones by Dave Malone, and the deeply resonant Live Free or Croak  by the Ozark poet/songwriter Larry S Rogers.  We published two collections of short stories--the sly yet charming Get Back, by Don Tassone, and the more surreal Anklet and Other Stories by Shome Dasgupta.  A delightful new novel, Single in Southeast Texas by Gretchen Johnson, raised a fascinating set of questions.  Don Tassone's hard-edged yet ultimately hopeful Drive was released that September, his second Golden Antelope publication.  Steven Wineman's astonishingly empathetic The Therapy Journal came out with all its royalties earmarked as donations to three shelters for victims of abuse.  And Lisa Brognano's novel, In the Interest of Faye, a cheerful romp through the world of a young art gallery curator, was released in time for Christmas that year. 

2018 was equally busy.  We released veteran journalist Patricia Watts' uncanny morality tale, The Frayer, in February.  Craig Albin's wonderful book of Ozark poems came out in April.   Don Tassone's collection of "appetizers, entrees, and desserts" titled Small Bites, hit the stores on June 4.  Geoffrey Craig's wise and wonderful The One-Eyed Man and Other Stories came out in September, and Nancy Minor's beautiful, meditative, heart-opening Malheur August was released in mid-October. Jack Powers' poetry collection, Everybody's Vaguely Familiar, remarkable for its humor, precision, and empathy, came out in December.

We enjoyed 2019, too.  Holly Day's vibrant and vulnerable poetry collection, Into the Cracks, was  released on May 6.  We proudly published the debut novel of Jerry Burger, whose textbooks on  social psychology are widely taught. The subtle characters in The Shadows of 1915 live with the long-term effects of a terrible trauma--some with generosity, others having developed a taste for anger and a habit of bitterness. It's beautifully written.  John Young's engaging When the Coin Is in the Air was released on July 18; the author's son Nick Young did its cover.  The Last Skipjack, Mary Fox's canny study of two alert and intelligent girls growing up in a highly segregated  Maryland town during the 1950s and 60s, came out on August 16. Mark Guerin's deeply human and ultimately hopeful novel, You Can See More From Up Here, earned impressive reviews. We ended the year with Geoffrey Craig's second Golden Antelope novel, a delightful, mildly erotic, piece of historical fiction titled Shakespeare's Younger Sister,  which features William's clever and independent sister Constance as thoughtful observer of life and class in a tumultuous time.  The term "bisexual" wasn't used in 1596, but like many in Shakespeare's world, Constance loves deeply. 

 We had eight Golden Antelope releases in 2020.  First came Bob Mielke's Calling Planet Earth:  Close Encounters with Sun Ra, a two-part book which includes Mielke's scholarly study of the musician, Sun Ra, and an original play which dramatizes Ra's unique perspectives.  Then came  Monica Barron's lovely collection of poems, Prairie Architecture,  a meditative tribute to the varied shapes of our dreams.  It was quickly followed by James Fowler's The Pain Trader, a wonderfully sensitive collection of  Ozark poetry.  In Patricia Averbach's brilliant novel, Resurrecting Rain (February 2020), we watch, entranced, as a middle-aged librarian (who had run away from her mother's hippie commune decades earlier) comes to grips with a truly impressive range of life's complexities.  And in early March we released Raya Tuffaha's To All the Yellow Flowers.  Tuffaha, a queer Muslim Palestinian American woman, is the youngest person we've ever published--a remarkably gifted student who codes political and personal struggles in metaphors which at times become allegories.  Hopeful and aware, To All the Yellow Flowers amazes us.

Lucinda Watson's extraordinary collection of poems, The Favorite, came out Oct. 1, 2020. Watson's insights into privilege--its assumptions and benefits, its traps and costs--are as precise as they are witty.  We're enormously proud of her.  Irish poet, Steve Denehan, released Days of Falling Flesh and Rising Moons on October 14.  Denehan's sense of humor is sometimes quite dark, but he can pull rainbows out of thin air just when they're needed most.  Linda Seidel's Belinda Chronicles, (release date Dec. 1) is our first official "memoir," a set of very short semi-fictionalized pieces about a recently retired professor who has moved her complicated and now divorced parents into the Lucky Stroke nursing home near "Middleville" MO. 

In 2021, Al Schnupp's Goods and Effects  came out.  With subtle empathy it depicts the complicated adjustments and slow healing which a strong woman sets in motion after her beloved husband and two young sons die in a farming accident.  John Young's Fire in the Field and Other Stories (June 15, 2021) features a wide range of protagonists, many of them at odds with their neighbors and families, and some at odds with themselves as well.  As with his 2019 Golden Antelope novel, When the Coin Is in the Air, Young's collection delights in surprises.  In late August, we released Gretchen Johnson's captivating Young Again.  This ultimately hopeful novel bounces from comedic to serious and back as it follows four faculty members who have (for various reasons) agreed to live for a semester in a college dorm, surrounded by students.  Does chaos follow? In December, Child of the Snows came out--anthropologist Tom Besom's carefully researched novel, set in the sixteenth century Inka empire, at a time when smaller groups were being manipulated into compliance with the empire, and the Spanish were still on boats approaching the land.  

In 2022, we slowed down, publishing only four new books.   In March, 2022 Randy Splitter's The Third Man came out.  Set among Jewish citizens of Vienna in the 1930s and 40s, it's rich, dark, bitter, sometimes bittersweet, and especially timely in 2022 as we watch developments in the Ukraine and Russia.  In June, Joe the Salamander, a wonderfully surreal novel by Timothy Gager, took its place on Golden Antelope's bookshelf.  It's a novel designed to help us understand the complicated pressures which an autistic youngster and his family must somehow manage.  In Joe, we watch a neurodiverse child learning/struggling to cope with seemingly insurmountable challenges.  Gager has published 18  books thus far--novels, short stories, poems, essays.  He writes with sensitivity and appreciation, leavened with humor.  In August we released The Shawl of Midnight by feminist lawyer and activist Jackie St. Joan.  The book, set near the border between Pakistan and India, features a family of Muslim women and the men who are or aren't their allies. It's a beautiful stand-alone sequel to her 2010 My Sisters Made of Light.  Read more at https://www.jacquelinestjoan.com/. In November, T.P. Bird's poetry collection, A Loose Rendering came out.  A retired industrial designer and Christian minister, Bird inspires a tender nostalgia in older readers, and an often-needed perspective in younger ones.

In 2023, we continued our slower pace, publishing four books.  In February we released Still Love, a new collection of poetry by Jack Powers, author of the 2018 collection, Everybody's Vaguely Familiar.  Powers recently retired from a storied career as creative writing, math, and special ed teacher and artist in Redding CT.  His new collection uses a gentle and affectionate humor to deal with aging, youth-ing, and other varieties of being lovable. (Check out www.jackpowers13.com for more.)  In late summer, we finished work on Tim Conley's quirky, surreal Dreaming Vienna, officially released in October.  In November, we had the privilege of publishing Gods of Four Mile Creek-- Phil Howerton's second collection of Ozarks poetry, enriched by photographs and essays.  We ended the year with Homo Articus: Contemplative Art, a book of paintings by Kajal Dass Beck--the first such to be published under the Golden Antelope label.  Her previous, India-centered, collection, Nava Alpana, was published by Blazing Sapphire.
